Transplant is an independent publication launched in 2026 by three friends who met in journalism school in New York City. Our mission is to highlight the old, the new and everything in between while honoring the city we call home.
New York City faces some of the harshest gentrification in the world. A huge percentage of New Yorkers face financial insecurity, a housing shortage and long lines just to get frozen yogurt.
It’s easy to blame transplants — mainly because, most of the time, it actually is their fault!
The name of this magazine shouldn’t be synonymous with detachment and disinterest. Being a transplant should translate into powerful action, meaningful connection and expansive ideas, and that’s why we decided to create a field guide to the five boroughs.
At Transplant, we cover the parts of New York City that are near extinction, up-and-coming artists and community events. This is the place to explore issues that affect everyone who loves New York City.

Founder and Editor-in-Chief
Mandie-Beth Chau has extensive experience reporting and editing in local newsrooms throughout New York City. Born in Virginia, Chau lived across several states and countries before settling in Brooklyn, where she lives with her best friend and their cat, Rory.
Chau moved to NYC with a dream of digging into underground scenes and highlighting underrepresented groups in media. From clowns and taxidermy to artist interviews and hard news, she is passionate about the weird, wacky and wonderful things happening in NYC.
Avery Loftis
Community Editor, Photo Editor and Events Lead
Avery Loftis hails from Detroit, M.I., where she first discovered DIY and underground art scenes. With a passion for audio and visual media, Loftis brings her multimedia talents to Transplant along with her extensive knowledge of grassroots organizing, burgeoning communities and little-known events.
Loftis lives in Brooklyn and never turns down a long commute for a good event. After all, the journey is often better than the destination. You’ll find her at basement concerts, trivia night at dive bars and reading in the park.
Paige Hagy
Special Projects and Managing Editor
Paige Hagy moved to New York City in 2019, originally from Pennsylvania. Hagy forged her career in business journalism at publications including Fortune, Business Insider, American Banker and Accounting Today. Transplant will be her outlet to explore cultural capital and an ever-changing city by examining what we lose when we fail to engage with the community.
Hagy cares about the classic NYC staples and is careful to appreciate things, and she wants to ensure that institutions and old-school events don’t get left behind as the city changes. Hagy is a collector of hobbies that connect her to the people around her. You'll find her handpoke tattooing, surfing in Rockaway and enjoying Prospect Park on a sunny day.
